Day 15: Baby Reading

Baby reading is a funny thing to watch.  The first thing Gigi does when she wakes up in the morning is point to her book shelves.  “a boo, a boo,” she says.  Her eyes light up with glee as we walk to the wall mounted shelves and she picks one out.  Of course there are books all over the house.  A basket on the floor in the living room.  Another in her bedroom.  But she loves to pick one from the wall shelves every morning.  This morning she picks one of her books in Greek, a book about colors.

Now that she’s older I love watching the emergent reader in her.  This morning the points to the title of the book and says “daadee” over and over again.  It doesn’t really make sense.  But to her it does.  To her she is reading.  I hope this joy for reading continues through her whole life.  For now, we snuggle together in the rocking chair and make up stories about the pictures since neither one of us can read Greek.
